What it's for

What this system reduces

  • Chlorine & chloramine
  • Chlorine taste & odor
  • Many organic compounds (VOCs)

We describe the reduction of these substances. Results depend on your incoming water and configuration.

Is the Black Diamond 1.0 right for my home?

Choose the Black Diamond carbon filter when the issue is taste and smell — chlorine and that flat, treated flavor — rather than scale. It uses coconut-shell carbon and no salt, so it suits homes without a hardness complaint. One clear note: carbon does not reduce nitrate; that requires reverse osmosis at the tap, and we'll point you there rather than sell you the wrong system.

Best for

Homes where the water is chlorinated and flat-tasting but hardness is not the main concern.

Black Diamond 1.0 questions

Does carbon filtration soften water?

No. Carbon reduces chlorine, taste, odor and many organics, but not hardness. For scale and spotting you want the softener or the combo. If your water is already acceptable on hardness and you just want it to taste better, carbon is the answer.

Will it reduce nitrate?

No — and we won't claim otherwise. Activated carbon does not reduce nitrate. Nitrate reduction needs a reverse-osmosis system at the point of use. If your water test shows nitrate, we recommend the correct system instead of this one.

How often does the media need service?

The metered backwash keeps the carbon working, and whole-home carbon media is typically replaced on a multi-year cycle depending on your water and usage. We provide the expected schedule for your setup.
